Renting a flat in Barcelona

Many people who live in the Catalan capital chose to rent flats or apartments in Barcelona as house prices in the city are generally quite high, especially compared to salaries. Rental prices are not cheap either but you can get a decent shared flat in a nice part of town for a reasonable rent.

Barcelona apartment

Be aware that the majority of flats and apartments on the rental market in Barcelona are unfurnished and many even don't have curtains. This may seem inconvenient if you are only staying a year, but unfurnished flats are a benefit if you are staying in the long term. According to the law, the tenant may stay at least five years in an unfurnished flat.

Typical rental prices in Barcelona

In Barcelona, rental prices (and purchase prices) are quoted per square metre. The number of bedrooms is normally not a particularly important factor for estate agencies in Barcelona. The map below shows the districts of Barcelona and their approximate 2010 average rental price per square metre per month. Barcelona has 10 districts but the district of Ciutat Vella has been split up into zones 1-4 below due to the huge variations in the average cost of renting.

Please note, these average prices are just intended as a guide and have been calculated using a sample of 2010 rental prices. A decent size one bedroom of around 55m2 which would be about €1045 per month in L'Eixample. If you shared a large three bedroom 100m2 flat in L'Eixample you would be paying around 630€ each. Always bear in mind that bargains can be found in Raval - the location is very central and the rent is usually cheap.
